Not all cats kill..but regardless of whether you have a cat that wouldn't
kill your gerbils..I wouldn't take the risk.  I have a 20lb cat that adores
my gerbil Wolf...Sly (the cat) just lies on his side while Wolf crawls all
over him....Sly is 9 yrs old and  has been around gerbils off and on his
whole life so I guess he doesn't view them as food:::shrug:::
