can gerbils purr?

A woman with whom I place a very people oriented/friendly female gerbil
pair now tells me that one of them is purring.  She likes to hold the
gerbil while she is watching TV and says that the sound of the purring
is so loud that everyone in the room can hear it.  Is this possible?
