Spotted question (nothing serious)

OK, is there a difference between spots, patches, and pieds?  I was looking
on the Dani clan and I noticed Sympatico a black "pied," but then I was
looking up another site (forgot witch one)  and they had a black "spotted"
gerbil, even though it had the same markings as the one Elizabeth had
(Sympatico).  So does everyone just call them what ever they want?  I thought
pieds had more white on them (like they had white ALL OVER).
