It is probably not urine you're smelling- it's most likely secretions from
the scent glands of the gerbil's underside. I have noticed odor from that
accumulating quickly if you have a pair of gerbils who are excessive
markers and wood toys in the cage. The wood absorbs the secretions and the
scent stays in the wood. Assuming they have wood toys in their enclosure, I
would suggest removing those and making them houses from cardboard (kleenex
boxes and such) instead. These you can just throw out and replace when they
stink. Just an thought- hope it helps!
