I have three gerbils in a large tank, and use aspen. I have noted that the
area they use as their little toilet needs to be changed more frequently
than with two gerbs. So, every week or so, I change the aspen there in
between major clean outs.
I have to say that the little gland smell males have has never bothered me
or been noticeable beyond a slight (and friendly) scent when they have sat
in my hand.

Perhaps there is some sort of medical problem here (?)
