Regular screen, even metal, like you would use for windows will not work.
It is not stiff enough and the gerbils can chew through it.
You will need to go to a hardware store and get a heavy 1/2 inch hareware
cloth. It is very stiff, and must be cut with wire cutters. I personally
left some of the wires al ittle longer so they protruded through the top of
my wire mess lid, this helped keep it stable. I then ran it from corner to
corner, not across the middle. This also helped give it stablility.
