Minnow traps are meant for minnows. A gerbil or hamster
can be hurt by one. Live traps (aka 'Havahart') work for
larger hamsters, and gerbils that aren't sneaky enough.

I find that the corner them and throw a hand towel over them
works.

[currently chasing an awol female dwarf campbell that has
been 'on the lam' for about two weeks...there is enough
food sources around here that she is doing well. she has
shown her whiskers in the family room tonight and I am
working on the capture....as she is ignoring the peanut
butter cemented down feast and soda cap of water in
the live trap]

Go to some active capturing. I use 2" pvc pipe lengths or pringles
potato chip cans with the ends taken off...put these near a
wall or other place that seems convenient to run to and through.

They will get used to this. Then sort of herd the animal to one,
and drop the rag on one side as they head into the pipe and
be on the other end to block it off. Block off the end, and go
after the rag-covered end, and pick them up in the tube
and carry them back to a cage.

One animal, out less than 24 hours, came to my putting his
cagemate (a female) on the floor for a few moments. He
ran across the area, smelled her smell, and hung around.
I threw the cloth right over him, and scooped him up in it.

I put him back in the tank, they smelled each other, went
'gee, glad you're here' and started grooming each other.

Wish you luck.
