Just a comment on this, since I've seen it mentioned several times:
We've reintroduced 3 female pairs after bloody fights (before I joined
the GML and learned more about this), and all three pairs lived happily
together until the end of their lives.
All three pairs (all of them were same age sisters) had their fights around
the age of 4-6 months. I assume they were trying to figure out dominance.
One was our first gerbils and we just put them back together after a few
hours, watching them carefully. They got along fine afterwards.
The other two pairs were in a split cage for a while and also never had
problems again.
Were we just lucky?
And I wouldn't recommend doing it, now that I know more, but I *do*
wonder...
