I really wouldn't reccomend it. Most gerbils are bred and raised in captivity,
in cages. I don't think they would have enough instinct to know where and what
food is, how to dig, and how to survive the heat. If you put 12 gerbils in a
squared off area outside, I would guess there would be no more than 2 left
after a month.
