Hi rachel,
One thing you could do is have them me indoor/outdoor gerbils :) You could
construct a large cage and keep it outdoors, let them have time outside but
bring them in at night and have an aquarium indorrs. Predators are very good
at getting into cages and gerbils are very god at escaping so I'm not quite
sure how you would keep them safely in a big area and be able to catch them
especially in the winter (I'm not sure a gerbil could survive a washington
winter). A big enclosure outside, if built securely and probably not in the
winter though may be a fun idea.
