After they "mated" did they check themselves (bend over and clean)?  If they
did, it sounds like mating to me.  Also, don't believe everything you hear
from the petstore.  I got a gerbil from the petstore once (before I really
knew anything about gerbils), I asked for a female (to go with my other
female) and they gave me a male (my first breeding pair).
