Okay, every time this topic comes up, I think of a recent story.
First off, for the record, I have never been "bit" by a gerbil. I avoid
bites like the plague! My husband has been bit several times breaking up
fights or catching loose gerbils.
Here's the story- When we were at the vet's in Fairbanks getting our pet
health certificates, the vet had to hold each gerbil and carefully check
each one over for signs of illness. As some of you might remember, Mike had
an infected eye that needed careful checking and Birch had several bite
wounds and a badly injured arm. Both gerbils were none-to-happy about being
poked and prodded. Both repeatedly chomped down on the vet's fingers.
Here's the shocker-not one bite (not one) cause any bleeding! I remember
Birch grabbing the vet's finger and refusing to let go, but instead of
panicking and yanking her hand away, the vet laughed and gently extracted
the gerbil from her finger. The vet admitted to owning and breeding gerbils
in college. Plenty of bites, but no blood!
That's the story and I'm sticking to it!
