Those things are often the same pressed recycled fiber stuff that
the egg cartons are made of. Those are ok as long as they are
CLEAN and never been on food prep surfaces or been used.

Butcher paper is wax or plastic coated (I have some that has
plastic on it, I use it for pattern making for stained glass panels)
and that is NO GOOD for your gerbils.
As for chickens and gerbils, they are quite different.
Best to leave the butcher paper out of it.
