I discovered a very easy way to train a gerbil pup to do a trick.
When I put my hand in the tank Promise (the mom) will climb into my
hand, up my arm and onto my shoulder. I had her do this several times,
until the pups started following her. Now at five weeks old both of
Promise's pups are doing it too.
So I am thinking that any trick the parents know can be quickly shown
and learned by their pups. Has anyone else tried this?

It's not just pups that can learn, full grown adults who are introduced will also
learn "tricks" from each other. I had one gerbil who learned how to fold their paper
nesting material over so that he could chew it into strips twice as fast. They'll
learn all kinds of things.
