It's not just pups that can learn, full grown adults who are
introduced will also learn "tricks" from each other.  I had one
gerbil who learned how to fold their paper nesting material over so
that he could chew it into strips twice as fast.  They'll learn all
kinds of things.

Yes, gerbils can be clever. They are known to move toys and objects,
to reach the top of their tank.
