Subject: Mixing own food

Hi everyone!

I have a question: I'm thinking about trying to mix my own food. I "only"
have 6 gerbils, and I don't know yet what would be cheaper, but the only
gerbilfood I can get here, is some mix for gerbils, hamsters en mice. And it
exists for 25 % out of sunflowerseeds. I have all my gerbs given a
mineralstone, for emergencees. I can get good food, but that shop is a two
houres drive,so... Just now, I have sorted out most of the sunflowerseeds,
put some birdseed in it, and some oats.
But before I really start with the mixing thing, I want to learn everything
I can learn about this subject. That means: Send me anything. I've read the
FAQ about this, but I still need some personal experiences!
Thank you all for any help!
Sarah

I mix my own food. I've come up with a couple different mixes, since I don't really
trust any commercially available product. If you look closely, you'll notice that
often there are nasty preservatives listed - ones that are outlawed in human food
products; ones that are used as rat poison. I figure that there's got to be a reason
our little guys are dying at age 3 when they reportedly used to live to 5 and 6. Hmm.
Anyway, here are my two recipes:

#1:13% protein, 7.6% fat

1 oz. Pumpkin seeds
6 oz. Dried corn
5 oz. Spelt
5 oz. Millet
1 oz. Flax
3 oz. Natural peanut butter dog biscuits
7 oz. Rolled oats.

(I use all organic ingredients to ensure no one gets any trace of pesticides or other
nasties!)

#2: 14% protein, 6% fat

15 g. pumpkin seeds
85 g. rolled oats
55 g. millet
150 g. bulgur wheat
145 g. Mr. Barky's vegetarian dog biscuits (14% protein, 5% fat containing grains,
vitamins, and natural preservatives)

All of my gerbils HATE the bulgur, plus I'd like to include more variety so I am
planning on fine-tuning this recipe... I'll keep you updated if you want.

Molly
