Yes, we used to have all our gerbils on dirt and they loved
it. We did, too, because you only have to clean their cage
every few months and they just had so much more to kepp them
happily occupied.
Unfortunately we read several articles about Legionnaire's
disease being transferred by dirt and we gave it up. All
the digging *was* making it pretty dusty in our house and we
just decided to go back to shavings.
I'd love to go back to dirt if I ever hear there is a way to
sterilize the dirt in a way that makes it safe.
