Yes, had tried it also! I had filled my terrarium with some stones and a layer of sand. They will immediately dig holes in it. They like it very much. It is also great to see them digging and the sand, stones and holes are a beautiful decoration.  You can see pictures of it on my page:

But I haven't sand in their cages anymore. It is more work and it will smell faster. I did sift the sand a couple times before I bought new sand.

Now I have a thick layer of wood-shavings in stead of sand. They like this also very much and it's more easy and cheaper, but not so nice to look at! Sand with holes is nicer to look at.

Subject: Digging gerbils

I haven't sent any emails to the group in a while, and I was wondering if anyone has tried this.  We have taken a regular 10 gallon aquarium and filled the bottom with dirt for our gerbils to dig in.  We filled about six inches of the cage with sifted dirt, and let it dry thoroughly.  The gerbils love to dig in it.  They already have an impressive tunnel, and they are still digging away.  I think that we will probably take them out if they breed, but for now, they seem very happy.  Has anyone else ever tried this?
