I've read somewhere a way of sterilizing dirt. You have to put it in the
oven for I think two hours, but I don't remember the temperature. I did it
once and I guess it works (don't know if it was sterilized, but it looked
like that) but the hamsters (I didn't even knew what a gerbil was) didn't
really enjoy it, but I can imagine gerbils would! You can also replace the
dirt by a mix of shavings, hay,.. to make it steady enough to make tunnels.
Works for me.
I'll try to find the correct way to sterilize the dirt.
