I have heard of using food coloring - of course this would only work on a gerbil with light-colored fur.  :)

When I had gerbils as a kid, my friend Matthew had his own method of
identifying his gerbils when there was one or more in the same enclosure that
looked identical.  He would (extremely) carefully trim the extra fur on the
end of the tail of one or more of the identical gerbils, giving them a flat
end to their tails.  I've now done that with the male nutmeg in my latest
litter, just by means of quick identification.  Out of curiosity, does anyone
else have another method?  I'm interested to hear.
