I have mine on peat moss and chinchilla dust (sepiolite). I clean them out
about once a month but I think they could go longer as it doesn't smell, but
it as usually dried out by then anyway.
p.s. they appear to love having their tank cleaned out, and I must admit
that I have done it in the past just so I can watch them sort it out. it has
also stopped my two females from pushing each other around the tank, which
they seemed to do when they were due to give birth. I have had no problems
with this system so far and I have had no problems with the pups, not even
one death so far (fingers crossed)
