About the "raging gerbils" =), I have one gerbil who has gotten very excited like that a few times. Usually it is when I have let her run around my apartment for a while and then put her back-- she really wants to get out again. However, I have noticed too that on occasion she does this for no apparent reason. Like Beki found, my gerbil kept jumping up at the lid (almost 2 feet!) relentlessly. I find that the only way to calm them down is to offer lots of things to chew- preferably toilet paper tubes. If they can be distracted for long enough, they might forget about the jumping etc. This almost always works for me.
