Hello all,

I'm new to the list and I don't have any gerbils --
yet. :) I plan on getting a same-gender pair in a few
weeks. Now before I do get them I have some questions.

1. I have an old 24 gallon aquarium that use to house
a number of freshwater fish. it's been sitting in the
laundry room for some time but today I dragged it
outside and filled it with a dilute bleach solution. I
left it outside for aout an hour and a half returning
two times to scrub vigorously with a paper towel. The
tank wasn't too impressed with the paper towel
apparently because when I dried it off, it had several
water stains still on it. I managed to get the
majority off, but a few remain. That wouldn't affect
the help of a gerbil in any way, could it? Is the
house and 1/2 of dilute bleach soaking enough to fully
sanitize it? I smell like bleach and my hands are
cursing me. *g* I'm planning to let it air out for a
few days before I put any bedding, toys, etc into it.

2. Is unfinished plain oak wood safe for gerbils to
chew on? I'm wondering since I had little pieces of
red oak left over from a woodshop project and I sawed
them into small pieces for the gerbils. They're rough
at the ends since the handsaw is horrible to work
with. :P

My apologies for the length of my questions,
especially the first one. Any help, at all, is deelpy
appreciated. :)

Christina
