I use old aquariums and dish soap and bleach to sterilize them and get
algae, etc. out. But then I rinse it more than thoroughly with very hot
water, and test the final filling for any chlorine before I dry it and
prepare it for the gerbils. So far, no problems, and they keep on breeding.
