Guys and gals,
Building a tunneling environment for your gerbils may sound exciting but is very dangerous. From my own personal experience I have learned the hard way. You will hurt, and worst case scenario will kill your gerbils. The tunnels will collapse either by them digging and digging or by you trying to get at a sick gerbil or just cleaning the cage.Just say " no".
Okay, now that I have said my peace I will now attempt to offer a alternative solution. Next time you are in the pet store go to the reptiles section and get some wooden hideaways from there. Also they have little cliff dwellings that go against the back of the aquariums and are perfect for giving the gerbils the tunneling affect without the dangers. They have alot of different sizes to suit different aquariums. I have discovered this little know secret last year and if works out great. I have a awesome little setup and have raised three large litters this way.I add corn fluff for the nursing mothers and they block whatever doorways they want with it. The material is made up of very hard plastic. They have gnawed on it for about a year and it shows no sign of wear. It is truly tough stuff.
Remember go to reptiles section.Get the cliff dwellings. Your gerbils will thank you. And best of all they will be safe. If we can't provide a safe place for our little ones then we don't deserve them.
