>If I were to separate a mated pair, then when should I separate them? Male
gerbils participate in raising the pups, right? And if he's not around, is
that not detrimental for the babies and the mom? But the pair mates again
immediately after a litter is born, correct? So when is the best time to
separate them? I'm thinking that I'd like to breed one litter in the
future, as there's no way my parents would tolerate so many rodents.

Your best bet then is to NOT pair up a male and female....except.
When you finally decide you want a litter, split cage the pair until
you see her showing signs of being in heat; lift the divider, let them
mate (separate them immediately and try later if they'd rather
fight than mate), then remove the male.
She will be able to raise the litter fine.
Then either leave a daughter with her (best) for a partner, or
do a split cage intro of a few weeks to another female gerbil.
