I don't know how you get by without it.

Well, if you don't care about the result of .gitignore then you could happily 
ignore an insufficient .gitignore file and leave it up to 'git status' users to 
fix .gitignore.

The multiple screenfuls of barf in 'git status' is, for me, a major impediment 
in being productive in this repository, and it frustrates me badly enough to 
want it out of the way yesterday.

Hence I will continue to try and find a solution that makes both of us happy...
