Hi
The "$ get_iplayer --update" command hasn't worked properly for ages.
It gives instructions to download a deb package...
 From "http://linuxcentre.net/get_iplayer/packages/get-iplayer-current.deb";
But the package that gets downloaded won't install.

Maybe the "$ get_iplayer --update" option should be disabled and removed from
--help menu.
Or modified to give more up-to-date instructions.

It works, but as I wrote, only for DIY installations. It's blocked if you installed via package manager, as you've seen. The "packagemanager" option is lurking in your system options file, put there during package installation. Its presence triggers the message you see. Look for /etc/get_iplayer/options - that's where the Debian package drops it, I think. It may not be worth deleting the option setting to hack around it, depending on your particular setup. If I'm reading things correctly, it looks like Debian testing/unstable packages were updated within the last few weeks with a version that has nearly all the user-level improvements implemented on the way to 2.80. If you can use one of those, you should be OK for a bit.
