Can't you use the --fatfilename or --hfsfilename Output Option switches
on GIP's command line? I assume it works the same under Linux as Windows.
--fatfilename Remove FAT forbidden characters in file and
directory names. Always applied on Windows.
Overrides --punctuation.

OS X Finder displaying colon as forward slash.

I had not come across --fatfilename. Thanks for drawing it to my attention.
It says it is always applied on Windows. That explains why I have never had
an invalid file name generated by get_iplayer even if the BBC puts in a
colon (which it does not do as often as the other UK broadcasters). It
probably makes sense for it to be the general default, or better to use a
lowest common denominator character set across all operating systems.
As for the problem which started this thread, very slow HLSHD downloads in
Windows 10 to an external 2TByte USB3 drive over a USB2 connection, I have
now eliminated a faulty drive as the cause. The replacement is slightly
faster at 2.5Mbit/s instead of 2.2Mbit/s but it is still 1/30 of the speed
of downloading to an internal drive. The slow down does not affect a laptop
with an AMD chipset and Windows 10 Pro. It does not affect a 1TByte drive
from the same family. It does affect two machines with Intel chipsets
running Windows 10 Home. One is a Dell Vostro 400 and the other is a
Toshiba Satellite A100. There is a difference between them. On the Vostro
the large file writing speed to the external drive without write caching is
10MByte/s. On the Satellite it is 25MByte/s, which is much closer to the
30MByte/s large file writing speed to the 1TByte drive. I guess it must be
the USB driver, but they all claim to use the same 10.0.10586.0 driver
version dating from 21/06/2006.
