I was told that the berlin project had a similar approach in the beginning,
i.e. to provide a very lightweight graphics engine that communicated with
client applications via ipc mechanisms. These ipc mechanisms are not so
much a means to share h/w resources, as to provide some minimal client
server architecture.
(and as to what concerns berlin: we decided to use a higher level abstraction
using 'distributed objects', as that gains us true location transparency,
instead of low overhead local communication)
