How do you want binary tarballs -- should I just build in a separate
directory and give them essentially a tree full of .libs directories
and makefiles?  Binary tarballs make me nervous, but I guess I'm the
one with the Alpha.

We should not presume to create Debian packages, unless one of 
us is a registered Debian developer, and in either case we should talk
to our Debian package maintainer.  I will e-mail him now.
