I agree on that point, even if Linux is a very mature project it can be
still fun to develop a kernel which works in a very different way; and
it can be much more fun to develop a complete subsystem of the kernel,
instead of a line here and there in Linux.  Have fun doing things is a
very important component in the Free Software world.
