Aah that's annoying, in which case the next step is to get some numbers
comparing against extend_from_slice.
I guess you could use `set_len` and do the copy_non_overlapping manually,
but I'd really like to see numbers comparing against extend_from_slice, this
smells very strongly of premature optimisation
