Yeah, I glanced at that same code yesterday and reached a similar
conclusion. We either need to teach the `$transform` to be a tri-state (e.g.
`Result<Option<...>>`) or the macro needs to handle `Variant::Null` separately,
bypassing the `$transform` entirely.
