Thanks Robert for pointing us to this article
http://tm0.com/sbct.cgi?s=66419766&i=337244&d=1363728,
which I assume was co-authored by you and Alexsis de Raadt St James, at M.I.T.

While everything you mention has a strong factual basis, I find it a little
surprising that the single medium that could affordably reach billions is
not mentioned at all. That medium is radio.

During GLD5 we intend to feature the use of radio and the Internet for
purposes of expanding education, training, community building. Our (virtual
of course) discussions will be about various step ladders -in "real world"
examples - which increase income for the very poor. (A good example was
found in today's NY Times where Tom Friedman talked of telework in Ghana.
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/05/08/opinion/08FRIE.html How many Ghananians
even know that this work goes in their capital? How many could find out
about it by the radio if there were ways to sustain periodic broadcasts?
How many radio stations in the developing world are effectively using the
Internet? What efforts are being made to build those bridges? Promote them?
Make them effective in the daily lives of those who need to jump the gap?)

The article does mention schools as the logical place to place the
computers and the personnel. But it is also quiet about
cybercafes, post offices, public-private tele-centers/learning centers. We
will endeavor to feature those kinds of places - and look to coin a name
for them. Suggestions about the coined name are very welcome?
(tele-ladder? tele-hope? tele-hall? uplink-coin?)

Robert, please don't miss the point that I would very much like to feature
the work being done by Digital Partnerships - and others like you.

But let's not pass up the use of Old World technology just because its Old
World.
