Using 4.1.x is fine. See [wiki:Building/Solaris#SelectingagoodGCCversion].

He did initially. I reported my findings to the ghc users list in January:

The summary is, use gcc 4.0.x or 4.1.x, not 4.2.x (4.3.x doesn't work).
The sparky build bot is currently using gcc-4.1.2 and ghc-6.8.3 as the
bootstrapping compiler for ghc stable and head branches. Both build in a
reasonable amount of time (with gmake -j8).
