My mother had a problem with AR coating wearing off on her lenses,
leaving them hazy. She couldn't see through the lenses even after
carefully cleaning them with lens cleaner and cloth.

When she had her glasses made, she paid extra for the AR coating, was
given some sort of a warranty on the coating, and told that she had to
purchase and use the optician's branded lens cleaner to maintain the
warranty. She did just that. However, her lenses started going hazy
after about a year. When I looked closely at them, I could see the
coating had worn off in spots.

She returned to the shop where she purchased the glasses (I think it
was one of those "glasses in an hour" places) and asked that the
coating be reapplied, that the lenses be replaced or that her money be
refunded. She had the receipt that showed both the purchase of the
glasses and the optician's branded lens cleaner.

The optician would do nothing for her. Told her that the AR coating
could not be reapplied, wouldn't replace the lenses, and only
offered her a discount on her next pair. She left the shop and never
patronized them again. She paid a lot for those glasses, and I think
she should have taken them to small claims court.

I've begun to regard it as a built-in "obsolescence factor" that
opticians push, a way to ensure that glasses only last for a short
period of time before they need to be replaced. Because of the bad
experience she had, I refuse AR coatings on my lenses.
