I find photochromatic lenses to be well worth it. One note however -
due to the UV coatings on car windshields, they do not work for
driving! I just keep a pair of clip-ons in the car.

I've had both grey and brown - I find my vision is better in the
brown. I do lots of going from light to dark (sunny pasture to dark
barn), and have no problems seeing with brown Transitions - when I had
grey, I found myself looking over the top of them when going from
sunny to shady.

Transitions (a photochromatic brand) are billed as being totally clear
when not activated, but you can see the tiniest tint when comparing to
regular lenses. They don't get quite as dark as regular sunglasses.
If I am going to be on the water or snow on a sunny day, I'll just use
my clip-ons over the Transitions (the clip-on prevents them from
darkening).

You'd have to check the Transitions site for the actual stats, but
they do not get as dark in extremely hot weather, and get darker than
usual in very cold weather. I live in Central New York - I've worn
them on humid 96 degree days and when it is 10 degrees with a -60 wind
chill and not noticed any difference.
