I have one pair of rimless frames. They're 46 mm wide, with a
prescription of -6.00 in 1.57 index lenses. The thickest part of the
lens is 4.5 mm, which isn't that bad. At that frame width, the lens
attachment screws might be too much in the way of the view for some
people. With a full or half-frame, you can get a smaller lens, even
maybe something like 35 mm wide, as long as you compensate with a
wider bridge or a temple attachment that extends past the lens.

In earlier times, when glass was the only lens material, small lenses
were common in order to reduce weight.

I have a Windsor pair (circular lens shape) with 41 mm lenses, and it
seems a little big on my face, partly because the height is also 41
mm. But I think that circular lenses 2-4 mm smaller would look better.
