You could also have your son hold the millimeter ruler in front of
your pupils (remember it's center to center).  Another way is to wear
a pair of glasses and make a mark with a felt tip pen at the center of
each pupil, then measure the width between the dots.  If you measure
all 3 ways and come up with similar PD's, it's probably right.  One or
two millimeters variance is not a big deal.

My PD is 60 and I have an average width face, so 53 sounds normal for
a narrow face.
