I agree that 53mm is quite small, but if you have a small head or
narrow head then it is possible. I have used a method similar to yours
for measuring PD in the past and it works quite well, however I would
suggest that the picture be taken from at least 8-10 feet back (so
that you don't focus on the camera which will be close to your face in
your method and would call your eyes to pull inward and decrease your
PD). You can stand further back and use the cameras zoom feature to
get a more close-up picture. You can open the picture in a program
like paint or ms picture viewer, but if you have photoshop, that's
fine too. If you find it hard to see the center of the actual pupil,
you can measure from the edge of the pupil to the same edge on the
other pupil (right edge of one pupil to right edge of the other pupil)
as this will be the same as center to center. The higher the
prescription, the more critical the PD measurement. Your in the mid to
high range so I'd want to be pretty sure of the PD.
If all else fails and you are still not 100% sure, try dropping by an
optical store (Wal-mart seems to be a popular choice) and have them
measure it for you. Some people have noted that they did this for free
and other have said there was a small charge for it.
As far as the high index lenses go, it couldn't hurt. Zenni has a 1.61
lens option also which would probably work for you since you probably
won't be buying something with large lenses anyway.
