A tip for those trying one-sided bifocals for the first time. (I have
been using them for years now).
You need to consider which side to put the bifocal on. This is
important IMHO.
I prefer to put the minimal size bifocal they make, on my NON-dominant
eye.
My theory is that when walking around, hiking or general use, I want
to have it seem as close to no bifocals as possible. The whole
reason I am doing this is to avoid the headaches I get from eyestrain
when wearing full bifocals hiking over rough ground.
Then when I need to look at my watch or GPS or map or compass, I have
to make a bit of effort to get the magnification. Certainly not as
much effort as digging out and swapping glasses. Sometimes I even
close the non-bifocal eye for close map work, sometimes its just a
quick glance.
Obviously I am not going to read a novel this way. :-)

Some people might have different needs, but its something to consider
either way.

My determination of dominant eye is the trick of holding your thumb up
in front of you, placing it over something in the mid distance. Then
takes turns blinking your eyes. Dominant eye open keeps the thumb in
place. Non-dominant eye makes the thumb jump. I would think that
effect would be significant walking around. Just a theory though.
Works for me!
