In my experience, this is characteristic of _any_ anti-reflective
coating.  It is more fragile than the scratch coat on plastic lenses
(and way more fragile than the surface of glass lenses), and soon
enough requires some attention to polish off the remnants.  I find the
unsightliness and inconvenience to be far in excess of AR coating's
subtle benefits.  It has its place on a camera lens, but not, in my
opinion, on glasses.
