People love to beat up on WalMart, but there's something to be said for the

In Texas the optometrist and the retail store *must* be separate entities,
but even so the WalMart eye doctors seem to have the latest and greatest
equipment, and the knowledge of how to use it.

Last WalMart eye exam I had even included a pressure test, not with the air
puff, but with the good stuff...the glass touch sensor with the blue light.
Can't remember the name of the equipment right this minute.

The local CostCo even does a visual field test.

I don't know if they have to be separate here in Louisiana. The
WalMart I go to has pretty much the same stuff everyone else does, and
they don't have the visual field test. I had one of those when I had
an eye exam from a LensCrafters doctor when I lived in another city.
The only pressure test I've ever had is the puff of air. The Wal Mart
doctor I think did a more thorough exam than the independent I went to
on the recommendation of my wife's coworker. She took around 20
minutes as opposed to 10.

Finding a good optometrist isn't easy, even with referrals, it's a
crapshoot.

Yep... I had a great optometrist, but he retired and I didn't
think his replacement was very good.

Fortunately, I found out one of the local Universities has
an optometry dept. They seem really good... exams are by
students and are reviewed by the professors. They have an
advanced clinic for things like dyslexia and other eye
disorders -- people come from around the state for those
diagnoses.

They're also great with online glasses... I asked for my
PD and told them why, they asked a lot of questions about
how I liked it, did I notice any problems, etc.

So if you happen to have an eyeball university in range
it's worth a try!
