HI all,
I just wanted to let everyone know that I have had nothing but back
luck and nightmares with with online glasses places lately. Believe
me, I've been totally on-board with the whole idea that brick-and-
mortar places are way overcharging. This site has been an inspiration.

The patient:
My son, Collin, 10 years old. His sphere in the left eye is +7.5 and
the right is +6.0.

Great experience, lenses nice and thin (about 4mm)

39dollarglasses part 2, about 1 year ago
I was specific to order the same exact thing, and the lenses came in
at about 6mm - real Coke Bottle types.
Try as I might to argue with them about how they never had to be this
thick before, they kept insisting it was because of his prescription.
Round after round of emails, phone calls, comparison pictures taken,
diagrams drawn later, they finally decided to re-do his glasses. This
resulted in the same exact problem - coke bottle lenses. Acknowledging
defeat, I finally opted for the 50% return policy.

It was here that I educated myself on lens material types. I even
found a cool site that will calculate the lens thickness based on
several parameters ( http://www.opticampus.com/tools/thickness.php )

Goggles4U, about 2 weeks ago
I finally took the plunge yet again, after finally finding an online
glasses place that has kid-size glasses, AND where you can specify the
lens material (I ordered the 1.67 - should have easily resulted in
less than 5mm thickness). This time I thought I had really licked the
problem! I educated myself! What could go wrong? Well, we got the
glasses, and the right eye was 4mm thick (perfect), but the left eye
was 6mm thick (coke bottle). I was aghast that it was acceptable that
someone thought it was ok to ship glasses with such a huge difference
(believe me, 2mm doesn't sound like much of a difference - but you can
really tell) in lens size for each eye.

I have now gone several rounds with Goggles, and once again I'm
getting the old "well the left eye is stronger so the lens will be
thinker" song-and-dance. I got so fed up with email, that I called
their phone customer service. The first guy's Indian accent was so
strong I barely understood him (he swore it was a US-based call
center), and when I asked to speak to his supervisor, *his* Indian
accent was better, but I got that horrible transcontinental echo thing
where you hear your own voice. I finally just hung up in abject
disgust.

At this point, I'll probably just have to take yet another 50% hit on
these glasses as well.

I'll say this for Lens Crafters (gasp! he said the name that shall not
be spoken!) at least when I buy glasses from them, I can yell at them
in person when they screw it up. That's worth at least $100 in my
book : )
