High prescription plus lenses can be difficult! Not just thickness, but in how they appear to people looking at them head on when you're wearing them. I read an article or two that recommended using aspheric lenses to help with appearance. Even if you stick with local stores, it's worth looking into.
Whatever was in your son's first lenses from 39dollar sounds like the ticket. Do you know what material they were made from?
