"... the under-ice ablation and lateral melt along marginal ice
zones tends to be overlooked. ... We find that the recent decrease of
sea ice cover is in large part due to oceanic forcing."
Albedo doesn't feature prominently, if the ice is melting from
underneath rapidly -- and Maslowski's with the submarine Navy, they
know this is happening, perhaps better than anyone not so equipped to
look from underneath.
