>Work as if ...

It needs not to be happening in any one place, of course. One well
moderated topic here is helpful. Y'all really _are_ doing this.

I think moderators who are in the sciences and are willing to make a
place for other scientists are probably doing this now; I hope so.
The scientists who have a lot to say to other scientists, but don't
want to say things that administrators, or those who could cause them
trouble, can pick up on.

So perhaps I'm saying this to encourage those who are doing this, or
wish they knew where it's happening, to speak well of the idea. Find
one another.

In any academic area I can think of with consequences for how people
or the world are treated --- from psychiatry to soil conservation ---
much of the real work improving the practice is done on breaks at
conventions, in the halls, after hours. Anytime the fractious and
self-aggrandizing aren't there.

In schoolyard ball games, I noticed often how the self-appointed
leaders would stop the play, hold onto the ball, and get into big
important arguments.

My tactic became to enlist a few friends, sneak up behind whichever
one had the ball, bat it free to where another kid could catch it, and
then we'd run off to the other side of the yard and get the game
started again.

Something like that ...
