Well, I'm pretty sanguine about people using "gulf stream" 
interchangeably with THC/MOC whatever the latest TLA-of-the-month is. 
The basic point remains: shutting down a significant part of the 
circulation would be expected to reduce regional temps over western 
Europe significantly (or at least, given that it will only happen 
against a background of warming, it would help to offset the warming). 
Of course that is ducking the questions of how likely it is to happen, 
and how much it would matter, but it certainly exists as a theoretical 
situation in model-world!

Not that I'm particularly impressed with Tim Flannery in general...
