Hi all, thought I'd follow up on a problem I brought up last week. My vacuum indicator had gone to zero and my directional gyro and horizontal gyro quit working in my '65 Alon. The problem turned out to be the vacuum pump mounted on the front of the motor below the output shaft. As many of you know, this unit uses a flexible coupling that is designed to "twist" apart if the vacuum pump locks up for some reason (a very good idea!). Well, my coupling had done exactly that. From under the cowl, the heat shields were taken off the front left side of the engine and partially removed from the right side. The vacuum line going to the panel was also removed. The vacuum pump could then be removed for inspection and / or replacement. After a thorough cleaning and new gaskets and a new coupling, I was back in business. The old coupling had probably not been replaced before... it was very brittle and yellow with age. Anyway, thanks for the advice and positive thoughts! This sure is an excellent site in that respect and I really appreciate the folks that take the time to help us relative new comers out.. I hope to see you in Michigan!
